Residential Tank Abandonments

  • The process of a proper tank abandonment is very similar to a tank removal.
  • Many times people think that an abandonment is their "easy" way out.  In fact, a proper tank abandonment is often more complicated than a tank removal.
  • During a proper tank abandonment, the contractor should gain access to a section of the tank top.  This means that digging to the top of the tank must occur. Once the tank top is revealed, it
must be cut open and cleaned by hand.  Once it has been determined that your tank did not leak, an inert material can be used to fill the tank in place.
  • Power washing the contents of your tank through the fill pipe makes no assurance that all of the contents have been removed.  Also, using this approach does not offer any assurance that your tank has not already leaked into the soil.
